One of the greatest war movies of all time, this film combines action-packed, high-caliber battle sequences with quintessential foxhole-buddy camaraderie. Released in 1943, its authenticity and power remain undiminished.
Two-time Academy Award(R) winner Anthony Quinn stars in this incredible account of the battle for a vital Pacific base during World War II. Concentrating on the personal lives of those involved, the film takes viewers through the preparations, landing and initial campaign on Guadalcanal during WWII. The characters include a marine sergeant (Lloyd Nolan), an army chaplain (Preston S. Foster), an enlistee from Mexico (Anthony Quinn), and a regular "joe" from Brooklyn (William Bendix). The narration is provided by an off-screen war correspondent character, played by Reed Hadley. Realistic battle scenes are capped by a dramatic, stunning victory in the campaign that contrasts to the real-life disappointment of the armed forces' early effort in the South Pacific.
