HE GUNS OF NAVARONE: Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn and David Niven are Allied saboteurs assigned an impossible mission: infiltrate an impregnable Nazi-held island and destroy the two enormous long-range field guns that prevent the rescue of 2,000 trapped British soldiers. Blacklisted screenwriter Carl Foreman (High Noon, The Bridge on the River Kwai) was determined to re-establish both his name and credibility after spending most of the 50's working in anonymity. To accomplish this, he decided to bring Alistair MacLean's best-selling novel, THE GUNS OF NAVARONE, to the screen. Supported by an all-star cast and produced on a grand scale, the film was an enormous success, receiving seven 1961 Academy Award® nominations (including Best Picture) and winning for Best Special Effects. Although Foreman achieved his goal, it was MacLean who would wind up the true beneficiary; his novels became the source for many high adventure screen epics, including Ice Station Zebra and Where Eagles Dare. However, it is THE GUNS OF NAVARONE that remains not only the best of the MacLean adaptations, but one of the greatest action/adventure spectacles ever produced. FROM HERE TO ETERNITY: In this landmark film, passion and tragedy collide on a military base as a fateful day in December 1941 draws near. Private Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) is a soldier and former boxer being manipulated by his superior and peers. His friend Maggio (Frank Sinatra) tries to help him but has his own troubles. Sergeant Warden (Burt Lancaster) and Karen Holmes (Deborah Kerr) tread on dangerous ground as lovers in an illicit affair. Each of their lives will be changed when their stories culminate in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Winner of eight Oscars®, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting awards for Sinatra in a career-defining role and for Donna Reed as a not-so-wholesome club hostess. BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI: When British POWs build a vital railway bridge in enemy-occupied Burma, Allied commandos are assigned to destroy it in David Lean's epic World War II adventure THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI. Spectacularly produced, THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI captured the imagination of the public and won seven 1957 Academy Awards®, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Alec Guinness), and Best Director. Even it's theme song, an old WWII whistling tune, the Colonel Bogey March, became a massive hit. THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI continues today as one of the most memorable cinematic experiences of all time. FIGHTING LEATHERNECKS: Incredible footage of some of the bloodiest battles ever fought highlights this stirring chronicle of the Marines' Pacific campaign in WWII. They came ashore on tiny coral atolls spread across the South Seas. They had to fight for every yard they earned, and at each stop they left behind comrades-in-arms. But they persevered in some of the bloodiest battles ever fought, and helped bring World War II to an end. From Wake Island to Okinawa, Guadalcanal to Iwo Jima, THE FIGHTING LEATHERNECKS OF WWII is a stirring chronicle of bravery and conquest, a step-by-step look at the costly battles that pushed the Japanese back toward their homeland. Filled with dramatic footage and interviews with the soldiers who were there, it captures the horror and heroism of one of the most famous campaigns in military history. Watch as the Marines creep across barren atolls, burning every inch in front of them to chase out the dug-in Japanese defenders. Listen
